Gameday Post #12: Texas Rangers at Yankees
After providing A.J. Burnett with more than enough run support Wednesday night, the Yankees offense and bullpen finally picked up a struggling Phil Hughes in last night’s 6-5 victory against the Orioles. Hughes labored through 4 1/3 innings and rarely topped 90 mph on his fastball, allowing five earned runs. Bartolo Colon, Joba Chamberlain and Mariano Rivera picked up the right-hander with a combined 5 2/3 shutout innings. Chamberlain made the play of the game with an excellent cover of home plate on a wild pitch, blocking Felix Pie from scoring. Jorge Posada hit the game-tying HR in the ninth inning and Nick Swisher earned the team’s first pie of 2011 with the walk-off sacrifice fly that scored Mark Teixeira.
Tonight on Jackie Robinson Day, Ivan Nova will take the hill looking to extend the Yankees’ win streak to three. He will open the three-game set vs. the Rangers’ Matt Harrison.
